Samantha’s story
Samantha fled an abusive relationship. This act of courage saved her life, but she didn’t know where to go for support. Women experiencing homelessness are in a vulnerable state, and they experience higher rates of violence. About 96% of homeless women have experienced some form of violence. Samantha needed somewhere where she felt secure, with people she could trust.
She came to Fred Victor’s Women’s Drop-In. When she arrived, she was struggling with severe anxiety and depression which made it even more difficult to find and keep stable housing. Our Women’s Drop-In gave Samantha the path forward she needed. The caring staff connected Samantha with a mental health caseworker. Samantha felt she could trust her caseworker to help support her. Together, they found appropriate counselling and medical support for Samantha, which helped her manage her symptoms, ease her distress, and take steps towards stability. Since connecting with Fred Victor, Samantha has moved into transitional housing, attends regular counselling, and found fulfilling work. She’s found the care and support she needs to rebuild her life on her own terms.
Last year, Fred Victor provided 2,643 people with secure shelter, food and support. You want to help? Fred Victor knows how to create safety and healing spaces.
