Mateo’s story

Mateo faced many challenges when he arrived in Canada as a refugee, just like many newcomers. Without local work experience, references, or a professional network, his job applications were repeatedly denied. He struggled to afford rent, food, and daily necessities. Mateo began to lose hope.

Isolated with no support to help him navigate an unfamiliar system, Mateo felt incredibly discouraged. Weeks of unemployment turned into months. He could not secure a permanent, stable place to live. Instead, he drifted from couch to couch, resting where he was able, and becoming one of Toronto’s many people experiencing “invisible” homelessness. One day, Mateo visited a local community centre to use the computer. A staff member there told him about Fred Victor’s Employment and Training Services. At Fred Victor, our compassionate and dedicated staff immediately recognized Mateo’s struggles and developed a plan to help him succeed. They guided him every step of the way—building his first Canadian resume and cover letter, preparing for interviews, and navigating employer expectations. With their support, Mateo gained job search skills and learned how to navigate the hiring process. Soon, he got work as a warehouse associate, a role that provided steady income and a renewed sense of confidence. He was able to secure housing. Mateo just needed some support.

Last year, 237 people received training from Fred Victor to improve income and employability. Our Employment and Training Services has a 97% participant satisfaction rate.
