Maricel’s story

Maricel had not had a full night’s sleep in weeks. She was in her third trimester. The mattress in her apartment was old and so worn out that it was causing her severe back pain. She was incredibly scared and overwhelmed. Maricel gave birth to a healthy baby boy, James, but her situation escalated when she brought him home from the hospital—she was in rental arrears, and her electricity was shut off.

Thankfully, she was able to reach out to her Fred Victor case manager, who she knew she could count on for support in times of crisis. Together, they submitted a request through our Home Help Fund. Maricel got a new mattress to alleviate her back pain and emergency arrears funding to reconnect her electricity and stabilize her housing situation. Working with her case manager prevented a high-risk crisis from escalating even further. They continued to work together to set up goals around financial planning to avoid future issues. Now, she’s focused on finding appropriate daycare for little James so that she can return to work after a maternity period.
