Leon’s story

Leon and his dog, Charlie, are inseparable. After years of working in construction, an accident left Leon unable to work. It felt like homelessness happened before he could process it—his savings disappeared quickly, and suddenly he was out on the streets. Leon never thought he’d lose everything. He felt as if there was nowhere left where he belonged. The only one he had left was his loyal companion, Charlie, standing by him.

However, Leon quickly discovered that many shelters in Toronto do not accept pets. He had to choose between abandoning his beloved pet or sleeping on the streets, an impossible choice. “He stuck by me, so I could never do that to him,” Leon said. Thankfully, Leon connected with Fred Victor’s Bethlehem United Shelter, one of the few long-term shelters in Toronto that allows pets to accompany their owners. Leon and Charlie now had a place to call home. Leon finally had somewhere stable where he could rest, recover, and plan his future. This stability gave him the space he needed to heal, both physically and emotionally. He began attending physical therapy sessions and even started volunteering with a local community garden. Today, Leon and Charlie enjoy long walks together, knowing that they have somewhere to return home at the end of the day.
