Ivana’s story

Ivana slid into homelessness after the loss of her job. It felt like something that happened to other people, not her. She felt a deep stigma around her situation, and it impacted her self esteem. On top of everything, she had nowhere to go where she felt she could practice basic hygiene. She felt incredibly ashamed and didn’t know where to turn for help she could trust. Ivana’s mental health deteriorated further.

Thankfully, Ivana met a Fred Victor case worker, who introduced her to the team at our Regent Park drop-in. They met Ivana where she was at instead of judging her. Ivana was also able to use the laundry and shower services at the drop-in. This simple act allowed her case worker to build trust with Ivana and work with her to connect with other supports she needed to achieve her goals. Ivana worked with our employment and training services team to get a placement in her field and, with support from our One Step Up fund, was able to secure an apartment of her own.

Fred Victor’s laundry and shower services, including hygiene items like hair combs, shampoo, and tampons, are a solace to those who need them, building trust and bridging the gap to accessing other services.
