5 Ways to Support People Who Are Experiencing Homelessness for the Holidays

The holidays can be especially hard for people experiencing homelessness and living in poverty.

Everywhere you look, there are reminders of celebration and abundance. Many people are making wish lists and planning gatherings. But for people who are experiencing homelessness, the focus is very different. They are wondering if they will have a warm meal. A safe place to sleep. A way to stay connected to family and friends.

If you are asking yourself, “How can I help?”, you’re not alone.

Here are five ways you can support people without a home and share warmth this holiday season.

1. Donate

Homeless shelters, food programs, and community organizations rely on donations. Your support helps them respond quickly when needs arise. Financial gifts are especially powerful. They allow staff to buy what is needed most, when it is needed. You also receive a charitable tax receipt.

Your donation can help provide:

  • Safe, warm places to sleep
  • Healthy, filling meals
  • Clean clothing and winter essentials
  • Caring support from trained staff

You can give a one-time gift or become a monthly donor. Monthly giving provides steady support all year and helps charities plan ahead.

Many people also like to choose where their money goes. Some prefer to support food and clothing. Others focus on housing programs. The best charities make it easy for you to direct your gift.

2. Shop for Good – Give the Most Needed Items for People Who Are Homeless

Shop for Good is a virtual gift catalogue where you do something different. You don’t buy something for yourself. You buy the most needed items for people experiencing poverty and homelessness.

Instead of shopping without thinking, you can shop with purpose. Every gift you choose helps someone stay safer, warmer, and more hopeful during the winter months.

In the catalogue, you’ll find items like:

  • A warm hat, mittens, and socks
  • A hot, nourishing meal
  • Winter boots and a cozy coat
  • Hygiene items and basic necessities
  • Support that helps people prepare for work and housing

You simply browse the catalogue, add items to your cart, and check out. The items are not shipped to you. They are turned into real support for people in our community.

3. Host a Holiday Fundraiser for Fred Victor

You can turn your holiday plans into support for the 6,000 people we serve every day.

Host a small fundraiser with your friends, family, school, or workplace. You might:

  • Organize a festive bake sale or hot chocolate stand
  • Ask guests at a holiday party to donate instead of bringing gifts
  • Set up an online fundraising page and share it on social media
  • Invite your team to give, then match gifts through your company if possible

A fundraiser brings people together and raises awareness, while also providing real help.

4. Volunteer with Your Team

This holiday season, there are many ways you and your coworkers can spread holiday cheer. Volunteering is a great way to make a direct impact on the lives of people experiencing homelessness. Human connection matters, especially during the holidays, when many people feel isolated.

We offer interactive, enriching and unique team building and employee engagement opportunities for small and large groups. Learn more about the opportunities we offer at this time.

5. Be Kind and Pay It Forward

One of the simplest ways to help this winter is to be kind and pay it forward.

When you see someone without a home, treat them the way you would want to be treated. Offer a smile, say hello, and if you’re able, meet a small need – like a hot drink or a snack. These moments of care can make a hard day a little easier.

As you celebrate with loved ones and think about what you’re grateful for, remember the people around you who are struggling. You can “pay it forward” by supporting organizations that help people find safety, warmth, and stability.

If you’re looking for a partner, get in touch with us at Fred Victor. We’re working to end homelessness in Toronto by giving people the support they need to get back on their feet.

Thanks for your support this holiday season – we can’t do it without you.
