Building Impact Behind the Scenes: Serving on Fred Victor’s Board – Spotlight on Chris Anastasopoulos, CPA, CA, MBA

In the charitable sector, Boards of Directors play a crucial role in driving organizations forward. They provide governance, ensure financial stewardship, guide strategic direction, and act as ambassadors for the mission and the people they serve. A strong Board is essential to a charity’s ability to create meaningful, lasting change.

At Fred Victor, our Board members bring this commitment to life every day. Their leadership, expertise, and deep connection to our mission ensure that we can meet the growing needs of people experiencing homelessness and poverty in Toronto. Through strategic guidance, financial oversight, and passionate advocacy, our Board helps Fred Victor stay strong, responsive, and focused on building a city where everyone has a place to call home.

One of the people who brings this commitment to life is Chris Anastasopoulos, a valued member of our Board and Chair of our Finance Committee. With a deep passion for community impact and a strong background in financial leadership, Chris has played a key role in strengthening Fred Victor’s ability to serve thousands of people across Toronto. In the post below, he shares his personal journey, the values that drive his service, and why he believes strategic leadership is critical to creating lasting change.

Bringing Leadership to Community: My Journey with Fred Victor’s Board by Chris Anastasopoulos, CPA, CA, MBA

Homelessness in Toronto, Canada is a growing and deeply complex crisis. On any given night, thousands of people in our city are without stable housing. Many also face additional barriers such as limited access to healthcare, mental health support, food, and employment opportunities. Addressing these systemic issues requires more than compassion—it requires sustained, strategic action and collaboration.

As a strategic finance professional, I have spent my career working with organizations focused on long-term value creation, fiscal sustainability, and strategic growth. However, I have always believed that my financial expertise should also be used to drive meaningful social impact and give back to the community that has helped me succeed.

That sense of responsibility runs deep for me. I am the child of immigrant parents who came to Canada with nothing, built a life for themselves and their family, and always found ways to support others trying to get on their feet. My parents often said to me “Chris, always support others whenever possible, even the smallest act of kindness can make a difference.” Their generosity and resilience shaped my values and instilled in me a belief that success is most meaningful when it is shared.

That belief brought me to Fred Victor, an organization I greatly admire for its integrated and person-centered approach to addressing homelessness and poverty. I joined the Finance Committee in 2018, became a Board member in 2020, and now serve as both Treasurer and Chair of the Finance Committee. In this capacity, I bring my experience in financial leadership and governance to ensure that Fred Victor remains fiscally strong, transparent, and strategically positioned to deliver critical services across Toronto.

Fred Victor is a leader in addressing homelessness and poverty in Toronto, providing housing, food, job training, and healthcare services to thousands of people each year. These services are rooted in Fred Victor’s deep understanding of the structural issues that keep people trapped in cycles of poverty. It is this multifaceted, person-centered approach that sets Fred Victor apart and makes my role on the Board both meaningful and impactful.

As a Board member, Treasurer and Chair of the Finance Committee, I work closely with a dedicated team of volunteer Board members to provide financial oversight, guide strategic resource allocation, and ensure the organization’s long-term sustainability. Good governance and responsible financial stewardship are essential in the nonprofit sector, where every dollar must stretch further to meet rising demand.

By applying rigorous financial discipline, risk management practices, and long-term planning, we help ensure that Fred Victor can continue to make an impact in a sustainable and fiscally responsible way. It is extremely rewarding to be able to leverage my over 30 years of finance leadership experience in Canada to ensure Fred Victor can continue expanding its essential services to meet the evolving needs of our community.

But this role is about more than financial oversight. The most rewarding part of serving on the Board is seeing the direct impact of Fred Victor’s work, whether it is providing someone with a warm meal, a place to sleep, or a pathway to employment. The work being done by Fred Victor is not just about addressing the immediate needs of individuals; it is about creating opportunities for people to rebuild their lives and become healthy and thriving members of our community. Seeing this in action reminds me why I chose to get involved, and why this work matters.

Serving on the Fred Victor Board has been an incredibly rewarding and humbling experience. It has shown me that strategic leadership and financial expertise can play a critical role in addressing some of society’s most pressing challenges. I am extremely proud to contribute to an organization that is not only meeting urgent needs but also building lasting pathways out of poverty for individuals across Toronto.

If you are looking to make a meaningful difference, I encourage you to get involved. There are many ways to support Fred Victor’s mission:

  • Donate to help people rebuild their lives.

Chris Anastasopoulos is a strategic financial executive, CPA and MBA with over 30 years of experience in the financial services sector, where he has led finance and operations teams at leading organizations such as DRI Capital, OMERS, and TD Bank.

At Fred Victor, we are deeply grateful for the dedication, expertise, and leadership of Board members like Chris. Their commitment strengthens our ability to respond to urgent needs today while building a stronger, more inclusive Toronto for tomorrow. Together, with the support of our Board, staff, donors, and community partners, we continue working toward a city where everyone has the opportunity to rebuild their lives and thrive.
