Fred’s Walk and Why You Need to Participate

Fred’s Walk is one of Fred Victor’s most significant fundraisers. It’s also an opportunity to take a more in-depth look at the critical programs and services offered at some of our 20+ sites across the City of Toronto. June 4th 2021 will mark out 6th year holding Fred’s Walk, the second year holding it virtually!

Participants will go on a virtual journey from site to site and learn about poverty and homelessness and what Fred Victor is doing in response. Fred’s Walk busts myths, provides facts and breaks down stigmas surrounding homelessness and poverty AND participants see firsthand how the funds they raised help.

How can you go on a virtual walk you ask?

This year, we’re getting creative again! We’ll be sharing videos that offer an exclusive look at 6 different Fred Victor locations across the city. Featuring interviews with our dedicated frontline workers, we will answer questions like: ‘‘What is the effect of the pandemic on homelessness in Toronto?”, ” How has Fred Victor approached individuals living in encampments?”, “Why it is important to engage with the community when opening a new shelter?” and many more.

The virtual format lets you explore Fred Victor locations that you might not be familiar with. Beyond our work in the downtown core, we also support residents in areas like North York and Scarborough. We’ll take a look at the important work that goes on inside each site and learn more about the unique services they offer.

Historically, Fred’s Walk is known not only for learning and fundraising but also all the steps achieved the day of the walk. While we can’t walk together in person, we are encouraging those who are able, to pick a week leading up to the event and log the number of kilometers walked. We will announce during the event the total number of kilometers walked leading up to event day.

On June 4th, Fred’s Walk participants log-on to the virtual walk live stream where our MC, Joshna Maharaj will guide participants through a virtual journey across Fred Victor’s sites. You will hear from Fred Victor staff all across the city who are keeping the city’s most vulnerable populations safe. There will be interesting facts, interactive activities and we will end the event with a presentation of awards.

So why join Fred’s Walk this year?

Fred Victor’s aim of ending homelessness and poverty in Toronto is now more important than ever. Our goal is to connect individuals to mental health and healthcare services, find appropriate housing for individuals and families with diverse needs, meet food access needs, and so much more. But during a global pandemic, we can see individuals and groups are being left on the sidelines and need our support.

Through Fred’s Walk, you will raise funds to ensure these services can stay open and support those most marginalized during this crisis and beyond. On the virtual walk, you will see how the funds you raise positively impact Fred Victor’s programs and services. Join us today!
