Emergency Shelter and Homelessness Service Worker Appreciation Week

It is with great pleasure that I share the news that Mayor John Tory and the City of Toronto have proclaimed the week of January 25 – 31, 2021 as Emergency Shelter and Homelessness Service Worker Appreciation Week.

Note: The acknowledgement comes largely out of the advocacy of the Toronto Shelter Network and Fred Victor’s very own Sylvia Braithwaite, Director of 24-Hour Services, who serves on their Board.

This is a much-deserved recognition of the frontline staff at Fred Victor – as well as across the Shelter and Homelessness Services sector.

Our frontline workers have stepped up in the face of unprecedented challenges this past year. The pandemic has intensified chronic food insecurity; the opioid crisis continues to ravage communities; and the need for affordable and accessible housing has only grown.

But our staff responded, and continue to respond, with great energy, creativity and determination. They show up – day-in-day-out – to help our city’s most vulnerable residents.

Over the last year, they managed to house nearly 400 women, men and families; expanded emergency shelters and COVID recovery sites; and increased harm reduction services – ultimately, impacting thousands of lives.

Please, join me in celebrating Fred Victor’s incredible frontline workers because you are a vital part of this team too.

For our staff to remain motivated to come in every day, and to stay committed to the work they do, it truly does make a difference knowing they have your encouragement and support. Thank you.

Keith Hambly,

CEO, Fred Victor
