Women's Bakery: From Classroom to Employment

two decorators and an instructor

The Women’s Bakery is a space for women who are seeking empowering training and employment opportunities. Alongside professional bakers and facilitators, the Women’s Bakery tackles barriers to employment such as lack of experience in the workforce, English as a second language, childcare challenges, housing instability, mental health limitations, transportation costs and others.

Using baking as a tool, Fred Victor fosters employability and entrepreneurship. Three months of classes, site visits, work experience, guest speakers followed by three months of paid on-the-job placements equip women with practical and transferable skills for the working world.

Ten women make up each cohort of bakery students.

Part of the training includes Christmas and seasonal cookie sales at farmer’s markets and other locations in the city. Watch for the beautifully packaged and excellent quality of these cookies at the St. Lawrence Market in December.
