Seasonal cards are designed by our art group community participants. There’s eight in a pack, four designs, they go for $10, and the money goes toward Open House programming. Order a pack by emailing Dagmar at firstname.lastname@example.org or give her a call at (416) 364-8228 ext. 1384. She'll make sure Canada Post gets them to you as soon as possible. Order soon though.
Open House staff assist people who need such fundamental things as: Personal Identification that enables them to receive healthcare services or to file an income tax return; a bank account; a pair of eye glasses to correct vision; a place to call home — or furniture to put in that home. During the winter months, individuals get such basics as warm socks, toques and toiletries.
The ongoing group programs offered by the Open House Drop-in are highly valuable in helping people who are coping with trauma, social isolation and extreme poverty. Groups such as Art Group and Photography Group, Garden Group, Members Forum, a Newsletter written by Open House folk, special events, celebrations and health workshops can be the beginning of a much better quality of life for participants.
The Open House Drop-in uses a harm reduction approach to addiction. Staff are in ongoing contact with intravenous drug users and crack users in the east end of the city. Three Mental Health and Justice Workers provide short-term case management to individuals with serious mental illness that are currently involved or at risk of involvement with the criminal justice system. As a LHIN-funded agency in Ontario, the Mental Health and Justice Workers use the Ontario Common Assessment of Need (OCAN), a health information database.
