Charities and churches are always so kind especially at this time of the year.
The Shoebox Project for Shelters
The Shoebox Project is a charity that spearheads and organizes the collection and delivery of shoeboxes that have been stuffed with little luxuries for women who are staying at emergency shelters, using day-time drop-ins or living on very low and limited incomes. The Shoebox Project in Toronto was the brainchild of Caroline Mulroney Lapham and her two sisters-in-law who continue to expand its reach each year.
We received close to 300 lovely gift boxes in total. Most were supplied and filled by employees of Dundee Kilmer Development Inc on November 25th at the Canary District Presentation Centre. Others were prepared by DREAM, one of Canada’s leading real estate companies and others were given by University of Toronto students and others. The women who receive the boxes are delighted. For some of them, it might be the only Christmas or Seasonal gift they receive. A warm thank you to each person who thought of a woman, filled a box, and wrote a note of greeting to them.
CityLine Television joined the volunteers to film a segment for their show in support of getting more Canadians to participate in giving this season. And Newstalk1010 radio also interviewed Michelle Taylor, the manager of the Women's Day Program.
United Church Women
See the vehicle? That’s Santa’s sleigh and it came all the way from Pickering! Had you seen it and the two women who emerged you would have been as impressed as we were! They arrived December 11th in the middle of a snowstorm and they’re members of the Dunbarton Fairport United Church Women’s group.
Why did they press on, leaving early in the morning, shopping and driving into downtown Toronto to Fred Victor Friends Restaurant with a foot of snow collecting on the ground? Valerie Hendry (the driver second to the left) said, well, she’d got all packed up and was ready to go so why not? She’d just go slow. Doreen and Valerie bring breakfast items enough for our community every Christmas as well as gifts for the Women’s Hostel.
There are so many wonderful United Church Women who donate at this time of year. They are truly good-hearted women. Thank you so much!
College of the Holy Spirit – Manila, The Philippines
Three charming and kind-hearted women (right) arrived at Fred Victor Administration on Thursday, December 4th. They were carrying bags of hygiene products for our men and women here, and a cheque for $500. As alumni of a school half a world away in the Philippines — the College of the Holy Spirit — they have formed a Canadian chapter for their Foundation. They join together to fundraise for great causes here and in the Philippines. This year marks their 10th anniversary in North America. Congratulations and thank you so much for including Fred Victor in your wide embrace.
