Several women from our community are featured in a Shoebox Project video after they were the lucky recipients of a shoebox filled with gifts and inspirational notes.
The Shoebox Project is a non-profit initiative that asks individuals and organizations to fill a shoebox with little luxuries during holidays and throughout the year so that they can be delivered to women living in shelters and affordable housing. Sixty boxes were filled by Dermalogica in honour of Nelson Mandela’s birthday and were delivered at our annual Women’s Day barbecue on July 25.
“The women were very surprised and very humbled. Even though they had seen other women receiving gifts, they felt special,” says Oriana, a Fred Victor Women’s Day front-line worker. “We always talk about the necessities of life and we forget about the niceties of life...like a nice scarf or make up. These things are not readily available to women who are poor because every penny is accounted for.”
