The air in the room was full of warmth as palpable as the scent of fresh-baked bread. Ten women had completed their six-month training in baking and customer service and were about to be feted.
Mandy Ridley, the stellar program co-ordinator commended the graduates, “I’m really proud of you all.” Sue Fleming, a member of the Bakery Advisory Board and Professor at George Brown College’s Chef School said: “You are a group of women who just needed a chance to shine. You’re all diamonds, you just needed a little polish.”
Women who had experienced significant barriers to employment in the past are now hired full-time in bakeries, are enrolled in further education or are working as volunteers to gain more experience.
