Mary Sheffield, was a single mother in Toronto, who in 1886, became a leader in addressing issues of poverty and homelessness in Toronto by forming what became the forerunner of the Fred Victor Mission, which eventually became Fred Victor Centre. Last year’s winner, Valerie Elliot Hyman, believes that this award is “important as it puts a spotlight on the issue of the growing number of women experiencing homelessness in Toronto, and the great work that many women across the city are engaged in to address it.”
