Housing

Fred Victor Centre is dedicated to providing long-term solutions to address the issues of poverty and homelessness. The primary goal of Fred Victor Centre housing is to provide safe, affordable, supported housing to enable people to end their cycle of homelessness and instability.

FRED VICTOR CENTRE HOUSING

Fred Victor Centre Housing provides permanent housing for 194 men and women at the corner of Queen and Jarvis streets in downtown Toronto. Tenants who move into Fred Victor Centre Housing have experienced long periods of living on the streets, in hostels or in health or correctional institutions.

Our Housing operates under the Tenant Protection Act and rent is geared to a tenant's income. Each tenant has a single furnished bedroom, with a small fridge and lockable kitchen cupboards. A washroom is shared with one other tenant, and a common kitchen and living space is shared with three to seven tenants depending on the size of the apartment. There are female only, and male only floors as well as a co-ed unit.

Housing staff is on site 24 hours a day. They work with tenants to assist them in making a successful transition to permanent housing. Staff facilitates activities that support and encourage tenant participation in decision-making. There are numerous opportunities for tenants to overcome social isolation, stabilize their lives and develop a commitment to their housing: tenant meetings; social and recreational activities; and employment opportunities focusing on building safety and maintenance.

HOUSING ACCESS AND SUPPORT SERVICES

Fred Victor Centre's Housing Access and Support Services respond to the needs of chronically homeless adults in downtown Toronto. Housing Support Workers reach out into the community and meet with homeless individuals wherever they are, in shelters, hostels and drop-in-centres. They provide intensive and practical one-on-one support and case management to help clients find appropriate housing in the private and not-for-profit housing sector. Additionally, housing support Workers provide practical follow-up support for one year, to help clients maintain their housing.

Fred Victor Centre's Housing Access and Support Services also manages the following programs for the City of Toronto:

Streets to Homes Housing Follow Up Program - We provide intensive follow-up services and case management to clients who have been housed through the City of Toronto's Streets to Homes Program. This program is designed for clients who had previously been living on the street and/or "living rough"

Hostels to Homes Housing Follow Up program - We provide intensive follow-up support to individuals who have recently been housed through this program. This is a pilot project being run by the City. This program is designed for clients who require intesive case management services, regularly scheduled visits by a housing support worker, and life/social skills development in order to maintain their housing.

INTERCHURCH COMMUNITY HOUSING CORPORATION

Located at Coxwell and Mortimer Streets in Toronto's east end, Interchurch Community Housing is managed by Fred Victor Centre. With 29 units and 59 tenants, including children, it is an affordable housing community where rent is geared to income.

Fred Victor Centre staff collects rents, coordinates the completion of maintenance orders, and helps tenants find information about other social services and community supports. Staff also provide all additional maintenance and janitorial services.

SUPPORTIVE HOUSING

Fred Victor Centre manages safe, affordable, supportive housing that either prevents people from becoming homeless or enables people to end their cycle of homelessness and instability.

TENANT COMMUNITY SERVICES AT TORONTO COMMUNITY HOUSING CORPORATION

Fred Victor Centre provides Tenant Community Services in the Toronto Community Housing Corporation buildings, located at 855 Roselawn Avenue and at 250 Davenport Road. Both buildings are home to families and individuals with diverse ethnic and racial backgrounds, sources of income, and a wide range of ages and levels of health.

The Tenant Community Services program encourages tenants to take an active role in shaping their communities. Through community development, we work with tenants to bring improvements in resident safety and to strengthen tenants' connections to each other. We work collaboratively to improve the health and wellness of all members of the community.
