Many people who live on fixed or very low incomes are forced to make difficult decisions every day... whether to give up one or more proper meals a day or pay for something else. Friends Restaurant, at 145 Queen Street East, makes it possible to do both.
Every weekday, Friends Restaurant serves two, low-cost and nutritious meals. Doors are open from 10 to 11:30 a.m. for brunch; and from 4 to 5:30 p.m. for dinner.
As well as preparing healthy and fresh meals for the community, Friends Restaurant acts as a training space for the Career Directions in Hospitality program offered by Fred Victor Employment and Training Services and the commercial kitchen is used by Friends Catering, the Women’s Bakery and for community celebrations. Friends Catering Company is a Social Purpose Enterprise that grew out of Friends Restaurant. Opened in 2008 with the help of the Toronto Enterprise Fund, Friends Catering is a successful business that achieves community and social outcomes.
The main purpose of the enterprise is to train and employ members of our community who have experienced significant, life-limiting difficulty in finding a nd keeping employment. The business trains people over a six-month period.
But Friends Catering does much more than offer training and work experience in the food industry. Friends provides fresh, delicious meals for corporate boardroom meetings, community events and private occasions right across Toronto.
